THE CAM DIASPORA NEAR THE POLES

CAM plants are typically considered water-use efficient plants of the tropics and semi-tropics. Whilst writing a review I became aware of plants known to express CAM, and plants in lineages with CAM, that grow in sub-Arctic and sub-Antarctic regions. I wondered whether these species expressed CAM when at their chilly latitudinal limits…and if so, why? I am attempting to test for CAM in some of these plants (see ‘A Chilean CAM adventure‘).
